Charity campaign exceeds 1996 total by $10,000"Giving to Help," the University's Campaign for the United Way and Other Charities, has exceeded its goal of $250,000, raising a total of $257,338 -- nearly $10,000 more than last year's campaign. "We're grateful to everyone who contributed to the campaign and to the volunteers who worked so hard to help this worthwhile cause," said Jonathan Kleinbard, Vice President for University News & Community Affairs and campaign coordinator. "Faculty and staff really came through this year, meeting and exceeding our expectations for those who need help. We hope to do even better next year, raising the participation rate as well as the dollars that go to help." The campaign was coordinated by Katherine Streicher of the Laboratory Schools and Karen Rosselli of Human Resources Management. A total of $126,286 was contributed to the United Way/Crusade of Mercy, and $131,052 was designated for other charities. Sixty-four individuals contributed $1,000 or more. The overall participation rate was 18.5 percent, compared with 16 percent last year. In offices with 3 or more employees, the office with the highest rate of participation was the Registrar's Office, with a rate of 94 percent. Other offices with a participation rate of 70 percent or more include Real Estate Operations, 87 percent; the University News Office, 77 percent; Deans and Directors, 76 percent; Office of the Director for Special Projects, 75 percent; University News & Community Affairs, 73 percent; and Legal Counsel, 71 percent. Biological Sciences Division Academic Programs, with two employees, had a contribution rate of 100 percent. Areas whose contributions totaled $7,000 or more are Graduate School of Business Instructors and Research Faculty, $18,261; Department of Medicine, $14,824; President's Office, $11,602; Deans and Directors, $8,600; Law School, $8,469; Legal Counsel, $8,148; and Divinity School, $7,088; At a luncheon for the volunteer leaders, the American Heart Association presented the University a plaque in appreciation for the funds raised through the campaign.
