    University merchandise on State St.

Berwanger, U of C memorabilia featured at Carson's event University of Chicago merchandise will be prominently displayed and Jay Berwanger (A.B.'36), winner in 1935 of the first Heisman Trophy, will be on hand to autograph photos at the Carson Pirie Scott & Co. store on State Street at noon Wednesday, Dec. 11. Berwanger's Heisman Trophy and other University memorabilia also will be displayed for the day.

The downtown Carson's store will carry University of Chicago sports apparel -- including the "Jay hat," a cap with the University emblem on it and Berwanger's autograph across the bill -- for an undetermined time, said Steve Klass, Director of Auxiliary Services.

"Typically, retail merchandising initiatives focus on athletic prowess. We are very excited that Carson's wants to work with us over time to celebrate the balance of world-class scholarlship and athletic achievements that historically have charcterized the University," Klass said.

Berwanger and the University merchandise display will be located in the sports apparel department of Carson's.
