    Letter from the University President

    October 18, 1996

Dear Member of the University Community,

I am writing to ask you to join me in helping those who are most in need by making a contribution to the University's annual United Way and Other Charities Campaign. This year, we are calling our campaign "Giving to Help."

So many of you already make important contributions to our community, either through volunteer work and/or support of those charities that help to sustain agencies and individuals. Our goal this year is $250,000. I am confident that as members of the University community we can join together and demonstrate our commitment by surpassing this goal.

Through "Giving to Help" we acknowledge the challenges faced by individuals who are less fortunate -- the homeless and hungry, the ill and indigent, those who suffer alone and often without hope. You may contribute through the University either to the United Way or to a favorite charity of your choice. You can support activities in the Hyde Park-Kenwood neighborhood, throughout the city of Chicago or the suburbs, or anywhere in the United States. All you have to do is designate the United Way or another charity to receive your contribution.

You can ensure our success by joining me in "Giving to Help." Within the next few weeks, you will receive a packet of campaign literature. Please use the cards in the packet to pledge a contribution. Give to ensure a better future for those who need our help.

    Sincerely,

    Hugo F. Sonnenschein
