Chance to learn about volunteer opportunities

The third annual Celebration of Service will be held in Reynolds Club on Thursday, Oct. 10, from 8 to 11 p.m. The event is a chance for students to learn about the wide range of volunteer opportunities in Chicago, as well as enjoy free food and a performance by the band Om.

Subtitled "Creating a Better Community," Celebration of Service is designed to raise awareness among students of the importance of and possibilities for volunteer opportunities both on and off campus. About 35 organizations from around the city will have informational tables set up in Reynolds Club.

At 8:15 p.m., a presentation will be given by businessman and philanthropist John Rogers Jr. in Mandel Hall. Rogers, who is president of Ariel Capital Management Inc. and president of the Chicago Park District Board of Commissioners, supports many Hyde Park groups through his Ariel Foundation.

Past Celebration of Service events have drawn as many as 800 students, said Michelle Obama, Associate Dean of Student Services and Director of the University Community Service Center. This year, even more students are expected to attend.
