Know the code! 773 in effect Oct. 12

In two days, the University's area code will change to 773.

As of Saturday, Oct. 12, the area code for Hyde Park and the rest of the city outside the downtown Loop area will change from 312 to 773. The area code for the Gleacher Center will remain 312.

Staff and faculty members, deans and officers of the University are responsible for making this change on their stationery, business cards and publications, in telephone speed-calling lists and computer-modem dialing scripts and in information used on the Internet and anywhere else University phone numbers are listed.

Most wireless services, such as cellular phones and pagers, will not be required to change area codes. One exception to this will be the 753-1880 telephone number used by faculty and staff members to access the University's paging system, which will change to the 773 area code.

Both new and old area codes will be in effect from Oct. 12 through Jan. 10. As of Jan. 11, all calls to the 773 area will have to be dialed with the correct area code.

Questions about the new area code may be directed to Networking, Telecommunications & Computer Operations at 702-9100.
