Rev. Buchanan Divinity School's Alumnus of Year

The Rev. John Buchanan has been named the Divinity School 1996 Alumnus of the Year. As moderator of the general assembly, Buchanan holds one of the highest offices in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He will accept the award and deliver a lecture at 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 17, in Swift Lecture Hall.

"John Buchanan embodies the ideal of learned ministry that, in this University, goes back as far as William Rainey Harper," said Clark Gilpin, Dean of the Divinity School. "He is a prominent figure in the Presbyterian Church which, like most mainstream churches, is struggling to reconcile deeply conflicting attitudes about social issues."

Buchanan is also pastor of the 4,100-member Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, which is noted for its community service, including a well-regarded tutoring project for the children of Cabrini Green.
