    Sacks memorial reception May 29

    A memorial reception for the family, friends and colleagues of University alumna Jean Sacks, former Assistant Director and Journals Manager for the Press, will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 29, at the Quadrangle Club.

    A 1939 graduate of the College, Sacks married and raised three children before joining the staff of the Press in 1962. She was employed at the Press for 22 years before her retirement in 1984. She is the author of The History of Journals From Chicago (1962) and in 1975 founded Signs: The Journal of Women in Culture and Society. Upon her retirement from the Press, she founded Benton Hartt Chocolates with her son, George; the company was sold in 1989.

    Sacks is survived by her daughter, Sheila Tabakoff of Memphis, Tenn.; sons George Koons of Chicago and Jeffrey Koons of Spokane, Wash.; and three grandchildren. Her second husband, Sheldon Sacks, was Professor in English until his death in 1979.
