Nominations for teaching awards now being accepted

Some of the University's best teachers are honored each year with awards worth as much as $5,000, and students who think that one of their teachers is exceptional are encouraged to nominate them. Students are encouraged to submit nominations for teaching awards for both faculty members and graduate students. Nominations are now being accepted for the Quantrell Awards, the Booth Prizes, the Faculty Awards for Excellence in Graduate Teaching and the Physical Sciences Teaching Prizes.

The Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, the oldest collegiate teaching prizes in the United States, are given to three or four faculty members each year. This year's Quantrell winners will be announced in the May 23 issue of the Chronicle and will receive their awards at the June 8 College Convocation. The winners each receive $5,000.

Nominations, signed by the nominator and stating the name of the faculty member and why she or he is an excellent teacher, should take the form of a letter addressed to the Dean of the College and be submitted to Harper 247 no later than Friday, March 15. For more information, call 702-8928.

The Wayne C. Booth Graduate Student Prizes for Excellence in Teaching honor graduate students who have taught in a formal capacity in the College for at least two quarters during their doctoral study and who have made an outstanding contribution to instructional programs in the College. Up to four awards are given annually. The prizes honor Wayne C. Booth, the George M. Pullman Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in English Language & Literature. The winners receive $2,000 each and will be recognized at the Honors Assembly in May.

Nominations should include the name of the nominee; the course, quarter and year in which the nominee taught; and his or her contribution to the education of College students. Nominations should take the form of a letter addressed to the Dean of the College and be submitted to Harper 247 no later than Friday, March 15. For more information, call 702-8928.

The Faculty Awards for Excellence in Graduate Teaching recognize regular, full-time faculty members in the divisions for exemplary graduate teaching. The awards will be presented to up to four faculty members at the spring Convocation. Each winner will receive a cash prize. Nominations should take the form of a letter and should include information about the nominee's specific contributions, innovations or approaches in teaching. Students are encouraged to work together on behalf of a nominee.

Nominations must include a letter of endorsement from the nominee's department chair. Letters should be addressed to the Faculty Awards for Excellence in Graduate Teaching Selection Committee and sent to the Office of Graduate Affairs, Administration 228, by Monday, April 8. The Physical Sciences Teaching Prizes, sponsored by the Physical Sciences Division and the Physical Sciences Collegiate Division, are awarded for exceptional teaching by a graduate student in a PSCD course. Up to three winners will each receive $500. Any University-affiliated person can submit a nomination, but special consideration will be given to nominations submitted by students. Nominations should take the form of one typewritten page outlining the graduate student's contributions to undergraduate education.
