    New roles for Shaw, Arbeiter, Spurgin

    Larry Arbeiter has been named Director of University Communications, effective immediately, announced Jonathan Kleinbard, Vice President for University News & Community Affairs.

    In addition, Jennifer Shaw has been appointed Director of Special Events, and Judith Spurgin, who has served as Director since 1989, has been named Director of Special Projects, which includes representing and staffing the University for the international Industry Summit to be held here in May.

    Arbeiter, who has been Director of the News Office since 1991, will supervise and direct the News and Publications offices and work with other departments of the University that are involved in marketing and public relations, as well as oversee efforts to use new technologies to enhance public relations. Arbeiter joined the News Office staff as Science Writer in 1979. He was appointed Senior Science Writer and Assistant Director in 1990.

    Spurgin joined the University as a member of the Development Office staff in 1988 and was appointed Director of Special Events in 1989. Shaw, who joined Special Events in 1988, was named Assistant Director in 1989 and Associate Director in 1994.
