    Graduate students excel in national competitions

    University of Chicago graduate students have performed exceptionally well in national fellowship competitions this year.

    Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowships went to eight students: Brian Axel, Elizabeth Beal, Daniel Meckel, Tamara Neuman, Anne Rockwell, Daniel Rothenberg, David Smilde and Michelle Stephenson.

    Spencer Foundation Dissertation Fellowships were awarded to David Slater and Emilio Parrado, who also won a Population Council Dissertation Fellowship.

    Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships went to Franz Metcalf and Cheryce Kramer, who also was awarded a Mellon Dissertation Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Humanities Dissertation Grant. An NEH Dissertation Grant was also given to Laurie Shannon.

    Five students received DAAD (German Academic Exchange) awards: Temby Caprio, Brian Currid, David Ellis, and Kari Robinson.

    USIA/IIE Fulbright awards were granted to Alexis Dudden, Anne O'Connell, Jennifer Heuer, Eric Kramer, Marie Orton, Christopher Roth, Rupert Stasch, Christopher Strawn, Melissa Wender and Anna Brzyski-Long, who also won an International Research & Exchange Board (IREX) award. Other IREX award recipients were Barry Guiduli and Joseph Humphries.

    Ten graduate students received National Science Foundation Fellowships: Maria Basterra, Melinda Brady, Nathan Dunfield, Adrienne Falcon, John Hunter, Michael Neblo, Shankar Raviswami, Stephanie Rollman, Nathan Sayre and Jean Tsa.

    A Social Science Research Council (SSRC) Joint Committee on the Soviet Union and Its Successor States Dissertation Fellowship went to Catherine O'Neil, and SSRC International Pre-Dissertation Fellowships were awarded to Philip Bond, Ariana Hernandez-Reguant, Ethan Michaelson, Jennifer Spruill and Julian Go, who also received a Foreign Language Enhancement Program (FLEP) award. FLEP awards were also granted to Nabil al-Tikriti, Carol Fair, Erin O'Donnell, Leslie Patterson, Michelle Stephenson, Richard Weiss and Renee Worringer.

    Melinda Brady received the Howard Hughes Fellowship, and Adrian Lewis won the Dwight D. Eisenhower/Clifford Roberts Graduate Fellowship and a CIC Dissertation Fellowship.

    The Amherst College Dissertation Writing Fellowship was awarded to Sudhir Venkatesh.

    The Gemini Fellowship for Research in Astronomy was granted to Marianne Takamiya, and the Department of Housing & Urban Development Dissertation Fellowship was awarded to Theresa Mah.

    Anne Harris received a Georges Lurcy Fellowship, and Stefano Mengozzi received an American Musicological Society Fellowship.

    Ford Foundation Fellowships were awarded to Melissa Morales Cogan and Lorraine Mora-Pederson.
