    Service for Edward Shils April 12

    A memorial service for Edward Shils, Distinguished Service Professor in the Committee on Social Thought and in Sociology and one of the world's most influential sociologists, will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, in Bond Chapel. Shils died Jan. 23. He was 84.

    Speaking at the memorial service will be Michael Loewe of Cambridge University; Anthony Yu, the Carl Darling Buck Distinguished Service Professor in the Humanities; Joseph Epstein, editor of The American Scholar; and S.N. Eisenstadt of Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

    Shils is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Adam and Carrie Shils of Chicago; a grandson, Sam Shils; and a nephew, Edward B. Shils, professor emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania.
