Travel smart: Use free evening bus, van services

For after-dark transportation in the neighborhood, the University offers free Evening Bus Service, Late Night Van Service and, on an emergency basis, Umbrella Coverage for students, faculty and staff.

Calls for Late Night Van Service are now being accepted from midnight through 3:45 a.m. After that time, calls will be referred to the University Police dispatcher as Umbrella Coverage. With Umbrella Coverage, the first available patrol car is dispatched to accompany the caller or callers while they walk to their destination. For Late Night Van Service, call 702-2022.

Beginning at 6 p.m., Evening Bus Service offers five routes covering the Hyde Park-South Kenwood neighborhood. Buses depart every 30 minutes, with the final run beginning at 1 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday nights, and at 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Four routes start and end on 57th Street at Regenstein Library, and one starts and ends in the Main Quadrangle. Drivers stop on signal. Bus maps and schedules are available in the Administration building (Bursar's Office, Registrar's Office), the Hospitals (cashier's desk), International House (front desk), Lab Schools (Room 105), Law School (receptionist desk), Mott Building (Comptroller's Office), Regenstein Library (reference desk) and University Bookstore (second-floor cashier).

For more information about University transportation services, call the Bus Information Line, 702-3988. An automated phone system offers information 24 hours a day.
