'Dial 1' change in effect April 1

Beginning Saturday, April 1, a 1 must be inserted when dialing long-distance and 708 numbers from campus phones. When dialing a number in the 708 area code, for example, callers will need to dial 9-1-708, followed by the phone number. When calling long-distance, callers will need to dial their long-distance access code, followed by 1, then the area code and phone number.

This change is required by the North American Numbering Plan, which allows for many new area codes. The 1+ dialing convention is needed to distinguish among the new area codes, normal seven-digit numbers and toll calls.
