photo Shadow Vignettes, a 26-piece jazz band led by composer/saxophonist Edward Wilkerson, will present its first Chicago performance in more than a decade at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, in Mandel Hall.

Shadow Vignettes, composed of members of Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, has entertained audiences in the United States, Europe and Japan with its interpretation of the African-American musical heritage, and Wilkerson's ability as a composer and saxophonist has been acclaimed worldwide. In addition to working with Shadow Vignettes, Wilkerson is the leader of Chicago's Eight Bold Souls, an ensemble whose second recording on the Arabesque label, "Ant Farm," will be released in 1995. He is also a member of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble.

The concert will feature flute soloist James Newton, who has been acclaimed in recent years as the nation's premier jazz flutist in Downbeat magazine's polls of critics and readers. Newton has recorded on the ECM, Blue Note and Gramavision record labels.

The concert is co-sponsored by the Jazz Institute of Chicago and the Department of Music and is underwritten by the Lila Wallace/Reader's Digest National Jazz Network and the Illinois Arts Council.

Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for members of the Jazz Institute and $8 for students. For tickets, call the Concert Office at 702-8068. Program change announced for Chamber Music Series concert
