    Creel memorial service Nov. 3

    A memorial service for Herrlee G. Creel (Ph.B.'26, A.M.'27, Ph.D.'29), the Martin A. Ryerson Distinguished Service Professor in East Asian Languages & Civilizations, will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 3, in Bond Chapel. A reception in Swift Commons will follow.

    Creel, who died in June, was one of the world's foremost scholars of Confucius and early Chinese philosophy, history and literature. He was a founder of the University's program in Far Eastern Studies, and he also was instrumental in establishing the University's Far Eastern Library, an internationally renowned collection of classical Chinese literature. He had been a University faculty member since 1936.

    Speakers at the memorial service will include David Keightley, professor at the University of California, Berkeley; Michael Loewe, professor at Cambridge University; Sydney Rosen, president of the University of Chicago alumni club of San Francisco; Edward Shaughnessy, Associate Professor in East Asian Languages & Civilizations; Tsuen-Hsuin Tsien, Professor Emeritus in East Asian Languages & Civilizations; and Anthony Yu, the Carl Darling Buck Distinguished Service Professor in the Humanities.
