    PsycINFO: Library's latest data base

As a part of its continuing effort to expand access to information resources, the University Library has recently added PsycINFO on Ovid to the campus network.

Published by the American Psychological Association, PsycINFO contains nonevaluative summaries of selected journal articles, technical reports, dissertations, chapters and books in psychology and related disciplines, including medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology and linguistics. Coverage is international in scope and includes material published since 1967. The print counterpart to PsycINFO is Psychological Abstracts.

PsycINFO on Ovid is available on UCInfo, the University's gopher server, in the Scholarly and Research Resources folder and in the Library Information folder, or by telnetting to ovid.uchicago.edu. Both the initial login command and the password are "ovid." Since access to PsycINFO is restricted to the University community, users will then be prompted to enter their Ph alias and Ph password. Public-access terminals in the Regenstein, Crerar, Social Service Administration and D'Angelo Law libraries also provide access to PsycINFO. To request additional information about accessing and searching PsycINFO, send e-mail to PsycInfoHelp@lib.uchicago.edu or call the General Reference Department at 702-4685.

Training sessions for PsycINFO will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. in Harper 406 on Tuesday, Oct. 25; Thursday, Oct. 27; Thursday, Nov. 3; Thursday, Nov. 10; and Tuesday, Nov. 15; and from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1.

    To reserve a place, e-mail PsycInfoHelp@lib.uchicago.edu or call 702-4483.

The Library is also continuing its test of FirstSearch, the on-line search system of OCLC, the Online Computer Library Center. More than 40 data bases, including WorldCat, the OCLC bibliographic file of over 30 million records, will be available through Wednesday, Nov. 30.

Many of the data base files now offer the option of electronically placing interlibrary-loan requests. If your account is on the Academic Server Cluster, you can access FirstSearch by entering "firstsearch" at the quads, ellis or kimbark prompt. If your account is not on quads, ellis or kimbark, you can send e-mail to FirstSearch@lib.uchicago.edu to request instructions for logging on.

Additional information about using FirstSearch is available on the gopher and at public-access workstations in the Regenstein, Crerar, Social Service Administration and D'Angelo Law libraries.
