Task forces to assess issues of student life, education

President Sonnenschein has convened three University-wide task forces to consider undergraduate education, graduate education and the quality of student life on campus.

Each task force will provide advice and counsel to the Deans, the Provost and the President and help guide long-term policy decisions that affect the future of the University.

"These task forces will work in conjunction with one another to forge a comprehensive vision of our university in a world of more limited resources," Provost Geoffrey Stone said. "Each group will address fundamental questions that go to the very heart of our mission."

The Task Force on Undergraduate Education will examine issues related to admissions, enrollment, financial aid, budgetary priorities, teaching by graduate students, curriculum and College governance.

The Task Force on Graduate Education will evaluate faculty size, the nature and composition of graduate programs, graduate-student expectations, enrollment, financial aid and the responsibilities of faculty members for teaching and research.

The Task Force on the Quality of Student Experience will review how the University can best provide students with a complete educational experience that includes high-quality residence halls, effective advising and counseling, accessible faculty, excellent teaching and a comprehensive curriculum, in addition to social, recreational and noncurricular intellectual activities.

Stone will chair the Task Force on Undergraduate Education and the Task Force on Graduate Education. Susan Kidwell, Professor in Geophysical Sciences, will chair the Task Force on the Quality of Student Experience.

Comments and inquiries concerning the task forces are welcome and should be directed to the Provost's Office by phone, 702-8810, or by fax, 702-2732.
