    Introduction to South Side communities

"Celebration of Community," an introduction to South Side communities and the community-service opportunities available in these neighborhoods, will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Oct. 8, in Ida Noyes Hall.

Jazz musician Bethany Pickens will entertain, and student and local service organizations will be represented at the fair. President Sonnenschein will introduce guest speakers Jackie Grimshaw of the Center for Neighborhood Technologies and Sokoni Karanja, founder and president of the Center for New Horizons. Local restaurants will serve Mexican, Middle Eastern and soul-food specialties, and a program guide to community service will be distributed.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is a collaborative effort of the University Community Service Center, the University Environmental Center, Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, the Campus Ministers, the Student Activities Office and a coalition of student organizations headed by the Giving Tree.
