    Opera under the stars

Opera under the stars will be the featured attraction of the Music Department's annual Summer Opera Festival. A series of three programs will be presented in Hutchinson Courtyard in July and August. All of the programs will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings.

The first show, Puccini's "Tosca" -- featuring a cast of professional singers, the Summer Opera Chorus and the University Symphony Orchestra -- is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, July 15 and 16. "The Mikado," conducted by Guy Victor Bordo and featuring the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company and the Gilbert & Sullivan Summer Orchestra, will be performed on July 22 and 23. The festival will conclude on Aug. 5 and 6 with a special production by the Lyric Opera Center for American Artists, the resident training and performance wing of the Lyric Opera of Chicago. The performances will be accompanied by the University of Chicago Symphony Orchestra, directed by Barbara Schubert.

Tickets for each performance are $12 in advance, $14 at the door, with a $4 discount for students. Series discounts are available. In case of rain, the performances will be held in Mandel Hall. For more information or to order tickets, call 702-8484.
