    Obituary: Harold 'Jeff' Metcalf, GSB

    Harold R. "Jeff" Metcalf (A.M.'53), former Dean of Students in the Graduate School of Business and Director of Athletics, died May 14 in his Hyde Park home. He was 71.

    Metcalf joined the University in 1954 as Assistant to the Dean in the GSB and Assistant Director of the GSB's downtown M.B.A. program. In 1956 he was named Dean of Students in the GSB, serving in that position for the next 20 years. He then was Director of Athletics from 1976 until his retirement in 1980.

    During his tenure at the University, he also served as chairman of the Graduate Management Admissions Council and of the Professional Schools Financial Aid Council. In addition, he served two lengthy terms on the International House board of governors, from 1972 to 1981 and from 1986 to 1993.

    He is survived by his wife, Karlyn.

    A memorial service is being planned, and a fundraising campaign is under way to name the lobby of the new University of Chicago Downtown Center in honor of Metcalf.
