25 Year Club: 7,566 years of service to UniversityA new club president was elected and 29 new members were inducted into the 25 Year Club at the club's annual award ceremony at the Quadrangle Club on May 4. The club honors staff members who have completed 25 or more consecutive years of service. Barbara Perkins, administrative assistant in Astronomy & Astrophysics, will serve as president of the club for the 1994-95 academic year. The club president is selected from its board of trustees, which consists of employees with 40 or more years of service. Before turning over the gavel to Perkins, outgoing president Paul Petrie, Director of Real Estate Operations, addressed the crowd. "When we came to the University as Johnny- or Janie-come-latelies, we had a job. By the time we put in 25 years we realized that we had a career. When we get to the 40-year mark, we understand that the University has become our life. I know I couldn't have chosen a better job, career or life," he said. In accepting her new appointment as club president, Perkins said, "I should like to say it is a privilege to work with a group of colleagues as fine as you -- thoroughly professional, experienced, imaginative, resourceful, energetic, dependable and always helpful. Your contributions add durable strength to the fabric of this University, which when under stress does not tear or become unraveled. I am proud of you, my co-workers." President Sonnenschein presented watches to the newest members of the club, and Arthur Sussman, Vice President for Administration and General Counsel, officiated at the ceremony. Each club member received discount certificates for merchandise purchased at the University Bookstore, plus two complimentary tickets to the Chicago White Sox game on U of C Night, May 9. Members of the club's board of trustees were invited to be photographed with President Sonnenschein on the field of Comiskey Park before the White Sox game. Currently, there are 256 active employees who have worked at the University for 25 or more years, representing a total of 7,566 years of service to the University. Of these employees, 10 have worked for 40 or more years.
