    Second annual Jazz Festival featuring three nights of mus

    Mwata Bowden -- the recipient of the 1994 Arts Midwest Jazz Master Award -- and his Sound Spectrum quartet will open the University's Second Annual Jazz Festival at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 12, in Goodspeed Recital Hall. The Jazz Festival will continue in Ida Noyes Hall on Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 14, with performances by some of the best known and most highly regarded jazz musicians in Chicago.

    On Friday, May 13, several groups will perform in various locations in Ida Noyes Hall. The Bethany Pickens Trio will play from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.; Flippomusic Global Jazz, from 8 to 10 p.m.; the Von Freeman Quartet, from 9 p.m. to midnight; and the Malachi Thompson Free Bop Band, from 10 to 11 p.m.

    On Saturday, May 14, the evening will begin with performances by the Andy Goodrich Quartet and Samana from 8 to 10 p.m. The New Horizons Ensemble will perform the final concert of the festival from 9:30 p.m. to midnight.

    Tickets for the opening night of the Jazz Festival are $10, $5 for students. Individual tickets for the Friday and Saturday shows are $12, $5 for students; a pass for both weekend nights is $20. To purchase tickets, call the Reynolds Club Box Office at 702-7300 or the Concert Office at 702-8068.
