UT, WHPK sponsor 'Battle of the Bands'

Music lovers will be the biggest winners when student bands compete in the Battle of the Bands at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, and Saturday, Jan. 15. The event, sponsored by University Theater and WHPK-FM, will be held in Kinahan Theater in Reynolds Club.

"The idea originated when we realized that although student groups perform in public places around campus, there really isn't a venue that spotlights the performers," said Andre Pluess, a third-year College student and organizer of the event. "With this event, the bands will have the chance to play to a completely attentive audience. The point is to bring the bands together, not just to create a competition." The winners will be given the title "Big Band on Campus."

Four bands will play on each night of the event. Friday night's concert will feature alternative- music bands Galaxy of Mailbox Whores, Dead Nature, Self-Help Mantra and Trixy Records recording artists Sabalon Glitz. Saturday night will showcase pop and classic rock bands, including Slow Poke and F. Supps.

Tickets are $3 and are available at Reynolds Club Bookstore Branch. For more information, call University Theater at 702-3414.
