    Doniger, Kaplan set to deliver addresses at 494th Convocation

    Newly designed banners featuring quotations of well-known alumni adorn the Main Quadrangles, through which graduation candidates will march this weekend.     The University will confer nearly 3,000 degrees on students from the College, graduate divisions and professional schools at its 494th Convocation ceremonies.

    Sessions will be held Friday, June 13, Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15 in Harper Quadrangle, rain or shine.

    Wendy Doniger, the Mircea Eliade Distinguished Service Professor in the Divinity School, will deliver the Convocation address at Sessions I, II and III. Steven Kaplan, the Neubauer Family Professor of Entrepreneurship and Finance in the Graduate School of Business, will deliver the Convocation address at Session IV, when degrees will be conferred on candidates in the Graduate School of Business.

    During Session I, degrees will be conferred on candidates in the Law School, the Irving B. Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies and the School of Social Service Administration. The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 13. Degree candidates will assemble at 8:15 a.m. in the Gerald Rather Athletics Center. Faculty members marching in the procession should arrive 30 minutes prior to the ceremony in Cobb Hall 119. Harper Quadrangle will open at 8:15 a.m. for guests.

    During Session II, degrees will be conferred upon candidates in the William B. and Catherine V. Graham School of General Studies, the Division of the Biological Sciences and the Pritzker School of Medicine, the Division of the Humanities, the Division of the Physical Sciences, the Division of Social Sciences and the Divinity School. The Honorary Degree recipients (see related story) and Faculty Awards for Excellence in Graduate Teaching (see stories on Pages 5-8) also will be presented at this session.

    The ceremony will take place at 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 13. Degree candidates should assemble at 1:15 p.m. in the Ratner Center. Faculty members marching in the procession should arrive at the Ratner Center 30 minutes prior to the ceremony. Harper Quadrangle will open for guests at 1:15 p.m.

    Session III will be for students in the College and will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 14. The Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the William Benton Medal for Distinguished Public Service will be presented at this session as well. Degree candidates should assemble at 8:45 a.m. at the Ratner Center. Faculty members marching in the procession should gather 30 minutes prior to the ceremony in Cobb Hall 119. The quadrangle will open for guests at 8:45 a.m.

    During Session IV, degrees will be conferred upon candidates in the Graduate School of Business at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 15. Degree candidates will assemble at 11:45 a.m. at the Ratner Center. Faculty members marching in the procession must arrive at the Ratner Center 30 minutes prior to the ceremony. The quadrangle will open for guests at 11:45 a.m.

    All guests at Session III, including children, must have a ticket to attend the ceremony. Tickets are not required for Sessions I, II or IV. A real-time broadcast of each ceremony will be shown in Mandel Hall, 1131 E. 57th St., and indoor seating will be available on a first-come basis.
