UChicago Argonne, LLC honors Argonne employees, awards College scholarships

    By Lisa Lavallee
Office of the Vice President for Research and National Laboratories

For the past 32 years, the University has honored select scientists and employees at Argonne National Laboratory for their distinguished performance and accomplishments through the University Board of Governors Distinguished Performance and Outstanding Service Awards Program. As the new operator of Argonne, the UChicago Argonne, LLC will continue the tradition.

The UChicago Argonne, LLC Board of Governors for Argonne Awards Program will honor 20 Argonne employees with awards and two children of Argonne employees, Vuk Brajuskovic and Ekaterina Koshelev, will be awarded scholarships to attend the University. The scholarships will cover their first-year undergraduate tuition and will automatically renew the following three years, as long as they remain full-time students in good academic standing.

Awards for Argonne employees will include Distinguished Performance Awards that recognize outstanding scientific or technical achievements, or a distinguished record of achievement of select Argonne employees; Outstanding Service Awards that are the highest honor the University gives to Argonne employees in support positions; and the Pinnacle of Education Award that recognizes an outstanding individual’s leadership in science through the Division of Educational Programs.

This new education award complements UChicago Argonne, LLC’s establishment of a Council on Education Outreach, whose purpose is to initiate, organize and execute scholarships, special grants for science and engineering projects, and focused efforts to bring additional students into science and engineering fields.

Each recipient will be presented with his or her respective award and a check for $3,500.

In addition to these awards, several individuals from Argonne will be recognized for their contributions toward the proposal effort to win the management contract for Argonne National Laboratory.

UChicago Argonne, LLC was selected in July 2006 to manage Argonne National Laboratory on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy for a five-year period beginning Oct. 1, 2006, with the possibility of an extension for up to 20 years based on performance. The company was formed by the University to provide the finest scientific leadership and best management practices to support innovation and discovery at Argonne that serves the national interest.
