Prayers for Virginia’s victims and survivors

Members of the University community remembered the victims of the shootings that occurred Monday, April 16, at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in a memorial service in Bond Chapel. The Thursday April 19 service, which was coordinated by Alison Boden, Dean of Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, and members of the University’s campus ministries, included prayers, readings and the lighting of candles. Robert Smith (above, center) of the Lutheran Campus Ministries prepares to read a passage at the service. Below, a woman sits and listens in the back of Bond Chapel.

In a related e-mail sent last week, Vice Presidents Hank Webber and Donald Reaves explained that the University’s emergency plan had been reviewed and modified by members of an emergency plan committee following 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, and that the committee met again last week. Based on that review, the committee concluded that the University is prepared to respond to emergency situations that may arise. The University of Chicago Police Department works closely with the Chicago Police Department and has a plan in place to coordinate communication and response in emergency situations. If anyone has any reason to believe a possible emergency exists, he or she should call the University Police Department at 123 from a campus phone or (773) 702-8181.
