Since 2004, when members of University Facilities Services and the Office of Community and Government Affairs introduced plans for new facilities on the South Campus to members of the University and broader Woodlawn community, a series of meetings have been convened. The next community-at-large meeting is being held from 6 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 26, at the School of Social Service Administration, 969 E. 60th St., Room W-1.

Co-sponsored by Alderwoman Arenda Troutman, the community-at-large meetings are held quarterly and are intended to keep the campus community and residents of Woodlawn informed as the South Campus building plans develop.

The upcoming meeting will include a status of each schedule for the buildings currently under construction on the South Campus; an update on business diversity and construction job initiatives; a discussion about construction logistics to minimize disruption to the community; and an opportunity for questions to be raised and answered.

On Thursday, Sept. 21, Elaine Lockwood Bean, Associate Vice President for Facilities Services, and her team updated members of the University community about the status of the South Campus projects.

The five projects discussed at the September meeting will be revisited Thursday, Oct. 26, as the Facilities Services team continues work on these projects. The projects are:

61st Street and Drexel Avenue Parking Structure — This project will create a 1,000-space parking garage for the University Hospitals as well as provide office space. Completion is scheduled for the fall of 2007.

The New Residence Halls and Dining Facility — Located south of the Burton-Judson Courts, the new structure will house 900-beds and a new dining hall. Phase one is slated for completion in August 2008, when 650 beds will be available. The remaining 250 beds are scheduled to be available in February 2009.

The Law School Tower Renovation — This interior renovation project will include the re-configuration of Library Services Support workspaces, enhancement and refurbishment of student study spaces and book stack areas, and reconstruction of accessible restrooms on each floor. The renovation is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2007.

The South Campus Chiller Plant — New chiller systems with 4,200 tons of capacity are being installed in the new two-story structure to be located south of the University Press Building. Additionally, a temporary parking lot will be constructed to replace the loss of about 50 parking spaces because of Chiller Plant project. The estimated completion date for the Chiller Plant is December of 2007.

The South Campus Utility Corridor — Construction of a new utility corridor, which will distribute steam and chilled water from the utility plants, is scheduled for completion in November of 2007.

More information about the Thursday, Oct. 26 meeting is with Sonya Malunda, Assistant Vice President, Director of Community Affairs, at (773) 702-4568.
