    Farewell to a publishing giant

The family members and friends of the late John H. Johnson (X.,’42), the founder and publisher of Jet and Ebony magazines, were joined by President Bill Clinton and other dignitaries in saying farewell to the publishing giant in a funeral service held in Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, Monday, Aug. 15.

Pall bearers—including University Trustee John Rogers Jr. (at center in background)—carried the casket down the chapel steps.

Crowds of John Johnson’s admirers stood outside Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, waiting to get a glimpse of his casket.

U.S. Senator (D.-Ill.) Barack Obama, who also spoke at the service, (at left) and President Bill Clinton chat with guests who came to celebrate Johnson’s life and publishing legacy. Others who spoke at the service were John Stroger Jr. and Tavis Smiley.
