    Mearsheimer, Becker are faculty speakers for the 477th Convocation

    The University’s 477th Convocation will take place in Harper Quadrangle, rain or shine, Friday, June 11 through Sunday, June 13.

    Faculty speakers for this year’s convocation are John Mearsheimer and Gary Becker.

    Mearsheimer, the R. Wendell Harrison Distinguished Service Professor in Political Science and Co-director of the Program on International Security Policy, will deliver a speech titled “The United States and the World in the 21st Century” during the ceremonies for the first three sessions. The program for Session III also will include remarks by graduating students Forest Timothy Gregg, Ann Therese Pretz and Edward “Ned” Tyrrell.

    Nobel laureate Gary Becker, University Professor in Economics and Sociology, will deliver a speech titled “Business Schools Within Universities: The Right Mix” at Session IV on Sunday, June 13.

    Session I will include the Law School, the Irving B. Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies and the School of Social Service Administration. The ceremony will take place Friday, June 11. Degree candidates will assemble at 7:45 a.m. in the Henry Crown Field House. Faculty members who plan to march in the procession must arrive at Henry Crown Field House 30 minutes before the ceremony begins. Harper Quadrangle will open at 7:45 a.m., and the ceremony will begin at 9 a.m.

    Session II will include the Biological Sciences Division, the Pritzker School of Medicine, the Graham School of General Studies, the Humanities Division, the Physical Sciences Division, the Social Sciences Division and the Divinity School. The 2004 Faculty Awards for Excellence in Graduate Teaching will be presented at this session, and honorary degrees will be conferred on six scholars (See story, Page 1). The ceremony will take place Friday, June 11. Degree candidates will assemble at 2:15 p.m. in Henry Crown Field House. Faculty members who plan to march in the procession must arrive at Henry Crown Field House 30 minutes before the ceremony begins. The quadrangle will open at 2:15 p.m., and the ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m.

    Session III will be for students in the College. The Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching will be presented at this session, and Edgar Jannotta, former Chairman of the Board of Trustees, will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. The ceremony will take place Saturday, June 12. Degree candidates will assemble at 8:45 a.m. in Henry Crown Field House. Faculty members who plan to march in the procession must arrive at Henry Crown Field House 30 minutes before the ceremony begins. The quadrangle will open at 8:45 a.m., and the ceremony will begin at 10 a.m.

    Session IV will be for students in the Graduate School of Business. The ceremony will take place Sunday, June 13. Degree candidates will assemble at 11:45 a.m. at Henry Crown Field House. Faculty members who plan to march in the procession must arrive at Henry Crown Field House 30 minutes before the ceremony begins. The quadrangle will open at 11:45 p.m., and the ceremony will begin at 1 p.m.

    All guests, including children, must have a ticket for the College and Graduate School of Business ceremonies. Tickets are not needed for Sessions I and II. For guests who need or wish to be indoors, a real-time broadcast of each ceremony will be shown in Mandel Hall, 1131 E. 59th St. Indoor seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. For Sessions III and IV, the College and Business School, people wishing to be seated in Mandel Hall must have a ticket.
