On Wednesday, Sept. 11, as people around the world came together to remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001, members of the University community gathered on the Main Quadrangle to reflect in their own way, with a program titled “Looking through September 11: From Remembrance to Hope.” Through prayer, poetry, song and silent reflection, presenters addressed not only themes of remembrance and healing, but also those of responsibility, unity and hope. Clockwise, from top left, doctoral candidate in Philosophy and United Airlines Captain Soma Getty Priddle spoke of renewed strength of pilots and passengers across the country. A crowd of students, faculty, staff and community members in attendance spent a moment in silence between the recitation of a memorial prayer from the Jewish tradition and a reading of a W.H. Auden poem. Christine Love, Executive Director of the University Alumni Association, called for remembrance of members of the alumni community. Residents of International House, including Aid Al-Farisi, presented readings on the importance of unity, and Kathy Stell, Deputy Dean of Students, delivered a message of responsibility through the words of poet Claude McKay. Kathy Irving, Assistant Director for Employee/Labor Relations, concluded the program with a song to inspire hope and peace.
