New Registrar comes to University from Duke

    By Carrie Golus
    News Office

Thomas Black, the new University Registrar, began his appointment in mid-July. Black comes to the University from Duke University, where he was associate university registrar since 1997.

Previously, for 12 years, Black was associate university registrar for systems and plans at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

During his career, Black has been deeply involved in implementing new student systems, developing new administrative processes and improving the reporting of student information.

At Chicago, Black will oversee a major project already in progress: the transition from a 25-year-old computer system to a new student information system, purchased a few years ago. Eventually, information stored in this system will be more easily available to faculty, students and staff, possibly via the Web.

Black also will oversee the automation of classroom scheduling, which will make the process simpler and more efficient.
