    University to celebrate its 465th Convocation

    The University’s 465th Convocation will take place in Harper Quadrangle, rain or shine, Friday, June 8, through Sunday, June 10.

    All guests, including children, must have a ticket for the College and Graduate School of Business ceremonies. Tickets are not needed for Sessions I and II. People with disabilities may request assistance in advance from the Convocation Coordinator at (773) 702-2513 or by e-mail at ose-convocation@uchicago.edu.

    In addition, a real-time broadcast of each ceremony will be shown in Mandel Hall for guests who need or wish to be indoors. Seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets will be required for indoor seating at Sessions III and IV, but they are not needed for Sessions I and II.

    Faculty speakers for this year’s convocation are Martha Nussbaum and Harry Davis.

    Nussbaum, the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law & Ethics in the Law School, Philosophy and the Divinity School, will deliver a speech titled “Political Animals: Luck, Need and Dignity,” during the ceremonies for the first three sessions. The program for session three also will include remarks by Kamilah Foreman, Justin Seidner and William Wilson, graduating students in the College.

    Davis, the Roger L. and Rachel M. Goetz Professor in the Graduate School of Business, will present a speech titled “The Professional and the Amateur” during the fourth session. U.S. Senator Jon Corzine (M.B.A., ’73) also will address the audience during the fourth session.

    Session I will include the Law School, the Irving B. Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies and the School of Social Service Administration. The ceremony will take place Friday, June 8. Degree candidates will assemble at 8:30 a.m. in Henry Crown Field House. Faculty members who plan to march in the procession must arrive at Henry Crown Field House 30 minutes before the ceremony begins. Harper Quadrangle will open at 9:15 a.m., and the ceremony will begin at 10 a.m.

    Session II will include the Biological Sciences Division, the Pritzker School of Medicine, the Graham School of General Studies, the Humanities Division, the Physical Sciences Division, the Social Sciences Division and the Divinity School. The 2001 Faculty Awards for Excellence in Graduate Teaching will be presented at this session, and honorary degrees will be conferred on three scholars, as well. The ceremony will take place Friday, June 8. Degree candidates will assemble at 1:30 p.m. in Henry Crown Field House. Faculty members who plan to march in the procession must arrive at Henry Crown Field House 30 minutes before the ceremony begins. The quadrangle will open at 2:15 p.m., and the ceremony will begin at 3 p.m.

    Session III will be for students in the College. The Llewellyn John and Harriet Manchester Quantrell Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching will be presented at this session. The ceremony will take place Saturday, June 9. Degree candidates will assemble at 8:30 a.m. in Henry Crown Field House. Faculty members who plan to march in the procession must arrive at Henry Crown Field House 30 minutes before the ceremony begins. The quadrangle will open at 9:15 a.m., and the ceremony will begin at 10 a.m.

    Session IV will be for students in the Graduate School of Business. The ceremony will take place Sunday, June 10. Degree candidates will assemble at 1:30 p.m. Henry Crown Field House. Faculty members who plan to march in the procession must arrive at Henry Crown Field House 30 minutes before the ceremony begins. The quadrangle will open at 2:15 p.m., and the ceremony will begin at 3 p.m.
