Susan Art, Associate Dean of Students, has been appointed Dean of Students in the College, effective July 1.

Art will succeed Katie Nash, who after 10 years of service as Dean of Students announced her plans for retirement in January.

In 1989, Art joined the staff of the Office of the Dean of Students as an Adviser. “Susan immediately proved herself a highly effective Adviser, regularly winning praise from our students as being extremely helpful and exceptionally knowledgeable,” said John Boyer, Dean of the College.

Since then, she has served as Assistant Dean of Students and more recently as Associate Dean.

“She has served with distinction and with great effectiveness in both positions, having special responsibility for assisting our students in preparing for national and international and other post-baccalaureate fellowship competitions and for advising students who wish to undertake academic careers leading to the Ph.D. degree,” Boyer continued.

Boyer also praised Art for her role in implementing the new College curriculum between 1998 and 2000, and said he anticipated that she would continue to serve as an effective advocate for students as Dean.

Art graduated from Oberlin College in 1973. She received an A.M. in English Language & Literature from the University in 1974.
