    Memorial service, reception set to celebrate life of late John Simpson

    The University community is invited to celebrate the life of the late John Simpson, the Arthur Holly Compton Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in Physics, at 11 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, in Max Palevsky Cinema, Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 E. 59th St. A reception will follow at the Quadrangle Club, 1155 E. 57th St.

    Simpson died on Thursday, Aug. 31, at the age of 83. A scientific group leader for the Manhattan Project, Simpson also was co-founder of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists and a pioneering physicist who flew the first cosmic-ray experiments to Mercury, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

    Donations in honor of Simpson may be made to the University of Chicago John Simpson Memorial Fund and sent to the attention of Robert Clayton, Director, Enrico Fermi Institute, the University of Chicago, 5640 S. Ellis Ave., Chicago, IL 60637.
