    Javanese Gamelan Ensemble with New Music Ensemble
    8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 6

    Now in its eighth season, the Javanese Gamelan Ensemble focuses on authentic performance practice and plays with visiting artists from Java and around the world. Contemporary Indonesian and American compositions, as well as traditional gamelan gendhing, are regular components of its repertoire. For this performance, the ensemble will perform works by members David Hunter, Paul Tobin, Maria Omo and Bill Whitmer, as well as Lou Harrison’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Gamelan.

    The University of Chicago Presents
    Boston Camerata with The Shakers of Sabbathday Lake
    8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12

    As part of The University of Chicago Presents’ Howard Mayer Brown International Early Music Series, the Boston Camerata with The Shakers of Sabbathday Lake will give a concert under the direction of Joel Cohen. This performance will mark the only Midwestern appearance and one of only four U.S. concerts this season for the Boston Camerata with The Shakers of Sabbathday Lake. The evening’s program will include spiritual, uplifting melodies from the earliest years of the Shaker movement, spirit and gift songs from the 19th century, as well as contemporary favorites.     Preconcert Lecture with Joel Cohen

    Joel Cohen (pictured left), musical director of the Boston Camerata with The Shakers of Sabbathday Lake and a pioneer in bringing unrecognized American music to the world’s attention, will give a preconcert lecture in the Reynolds Club South Lounge, 5706 S. University Ave.


    Shaker Meeting

    A traditional Sunday Shaker service will be held in place of the weekly ecumenical service at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, 5850 S. Woodlawn Ave. Free.

    40th Annual Folk Festival of Traditional American Music

    The 40th annual University Folk Festival will include three evenings of concerts in Mandel Hall, 1131 E. 57th St. Ticket prices for the evening concerts range from $13 to $17, with $7 discount tickets for students and children.
